Some projects arrive at my studio already carrying years of history inside them. When a box showed up from Florida a while back, I knew right away this was one of those. Inside were 30 sports jerseys, every single one belonging to a young man who had played basketball and baseball from the time he was in primary school all the way through his senior year of high school. His mom had carefully packed them up, shipped them to me in Atlanta, and trusted me to turn them into something he could keep forever.

That kind of trust means a lot to me. Mail-in orders are a big part of how I work, and I want every client who ships me their jerseys, whether they are across the state or across the country, to feel just as connected to the process as someone who walks through my door.

Thirty Jerseys, One Incredible Story

Thirty jerseys is a serious collection. When I laid them all out, I could see the whole arc of this kid's athletic life right there on my work table. The tiny primary school jerseys sat next to the big, broad-shouldered high school ones. Some were worn almost threadbare. Others still looked nearly new. All of them had a story stitched into the fabric.

I decided on a 5 by 6 layout, giving us 30 blocks, one for each jersey. That worked out perfectly, no jerseys left over and no blocks left empty. Every piece of fabric he ever wore on a court or a diamond made it into the final quilt.

Adding the Applique Details

One of my favorite decisions on this project was using applique to pull out the names and numbers from select jerseys and add them directly to the blocks. Not every block got this treatment, just the ones where it made sense visually and where the number or name had real significance. It gave the quilt a depth that you simply cannot get from just cutting and sewing the fabric as-is.

When you step back and look at the finished quilt, your eye moves across those appliqued details and you start reading the story. That number 12 in the corner, the team name arching across a block near the center. It becomes almost like a scrapbook, except it is soft and warm and built to last for decades.

How the Mail-In Process Works

This mom lives in Florida, so there was no dropping jerseys off in person. She boxed everything up and shipped it to my Atlanta studio, and we handled everything from there through email and phone. I walked her through the layout options, we agreed on the 5 by 6 grid, and I kept her updated as the quilt came together.

If you are not local to Atlanta, that is completely fine. I work with clients all over the country this way. You ship me the jerseys, we talk through what you want, and I ship the finished quilt back to you. The process is straightforward, and I make sure you feel informed and comfortable every step of the way. The only thing you need to do is pack up those jerseys and drop them at the post office.

A few things that make mail-in projects run smoothly: pack the jerseys loosely so they are not folded on hard creases for weeks, include a note with your contact information, and use a trackable shipping method so you know when the box arrives. I will always confirm receipt and reach out right away to start the conversation about your project.

What She Said When It Arrived Back Home

When the finished quilt landed on her doorstep in Florida, this mom reached out to tell me she was blown away to have all of her baby's sports memories captured so well. That is exactly what I am going for every single time. Not just a quilt, but a feeling. A way of holding onto something that would otherwise just sit in a box or slowly disappear.

Her son is heading into a new chapter now. The jerseys would have had nowhere to go. Instead, he has a quilt that tells the whole story of who he was as an athlete growing up, from the smallest kid on the court to the young man walking across a graduation stage. That is worth every stitch.

Turn Those Jerseys Into a Keepsake Quilt

Mail your jerseys to my Atlanta studio from anywhere in the country and I will handle the rest. Local and mail-in orders both welcome.
