What Is a T-Shirt Quilt?

Every Shirt Has a Story. This Is How You Keep It.

A t-shirt quilt is made from shirts you already own: band tees, college shirts, race event shirts, sports jerseys, or any collection of tops that represent a chapter of your life. Instead of sitting in a bin, they become a usable, handmade quilt that holds every one of those memories.

These quilts are popular graduation gifts, retirement gifts, and personal keepsakes. They are also one of the most common requests I get from parents preserving their kids' sports years or fans who have run out of closet space.

Every quilt starts with a free consultation. We talk through which shirts to include, what size works best, and how you want the finished quilt to look and feel.

What I Work With

If You Wore It, It Can Be in the Quilt

Almost any shirt or jersey can be incorporated. Here are some of the most popular.

Sports Jerseys & Warmups

Team jerseys, practice gear, and warmup jackets from seasons and careers worth remembering.

College & University Shirts

Four years of campus life, orientation tees, homecoming shirts, club gear, and Greek chapter apparel.

Band & Concert Tees

Tour shirts and concert tees collected over years of shows, too good to wear out, too good to throw away.

Fan & Team Apparel

NFL, NBA, MLB, and college fan gear collected across decades of loyalty to your teams.

Race & Event Shirts

5K, half marathon, and charity race shirts that represent real milestones, one finish line at a time.

Sorority & Fraternity Shirts

Chapter shirts, step show tees, and Greek life apparel that carry years of sisterhood and brotherhood.

Layout Options

Two Ways to Build Your Quilt

Both styles showcase your shirts beautifully. The right choice depends on how many shirts you have and the look you are going for.

Gallery style t-shirt quilt with uniform blocks arranged in a clean, symmetrical grid

Gallery Style

Clean, structured, and symmetrical. Every shirt is cut to the same block size for a polished, grid-like finish. Optional sashing can frame each block if you want a little breathing room between designs.

  • All blocks cut to a uniform size
  • Optional sashing available between blocks
  • Best for collections with similar graphic sizes
  • Popular for sports seasons, event series, and school years
Collage style t-shirt quilt with varied block sizes arranged in a dynamic, editorial layout

Collage Style

Dynamic, editorial, and expressive. Each shirt is cut to fit its own graphic so nothing important gets cropped. No two collage quilts ever look the same.

  • Block sizes vary to match each graphic
  • Best for mixed graphic sizes and varied collections
  • Popular for memorial quilts and sentimental clothing
  • Freeform layout, more creative, less structured

T-Shirt Quilt FAQ

The number of shirts depends on the size you choose. A Throw quilt (54 by 72 inches) typically uses 12 to 16 shirts. A Queen (84 by 96 inches) may use 25 or more. Bring everything you have and we will figure out the best fit at the consultation.

Yes. Shirts of all sizes can be incorporated, youth shirts, XL, oversized, and everything in between. Each shirt is cut to a consistent block size during the layout process, so sizing differences are not a problem.

Both the front and the back of a shirt can be used as separate blocks. If a shirt has a great design on the back, just let me know, we will include both sides.

Yes. Each shirt is cut into a quilt block that features the graphic or design. If that is a concern, I recommend keeping one unwashed shirt from a favorite team or event as a display piece and including the rest in the quilt.

You can drop off in person by appointment at CreateATL at 900 Murphy Ave SW, Atlanta, GA 30310. If you are not local, you can ship them directly. I will provide shipping instructions after your consultation.

Yes. T-shirt quilts hold up well over time. I recommend cold water on a gentle cycle and low-heat drying or air drying to protect the prints. Every finished quilt comes with care instructions.
