T-Shirt Quilt vs. Memory Quilt
Here is the short version: a t-shirt quilt is a memory quilt made from t-shirts. A memory quilt can be made from any clothing that matters. They overlap more than they differ, and you do not have to decide alone. I make both, by hand, in Atlanta.
Same Craft, Different Starting Material
Both are three-layer quilts, built the same way and priced the same way. What sets them apart is the clothing they start from and the reason you are making one.
The clean way to hold it in your head: every t-shirt quilt is a memory quilt, but not every memory quilt is a t-shirt quilt. The t-shirt quilt is the version made from tees. The memory quilt is everything else that matters, and it can include tees too.
Let the Clothing and the Occasion Decide
You do not really pick a category first and then find the clothes. It works the other way around. Start with what you have in the bin or the closet, then ask what the quilt is for.
If it is mostly t-shirts and jerseys and the moment is a graduation, a retirement, a season of games, that is a t-shirt quilt. If it is a loved one's shirts after a loss, a mix of baby clothes and christening fabrics, or garments that were never t-shirts to begin with, that is a memory quilt. If it is some of both, it is one quilt that happens to be both, and that is completely normal.
At your free consultation I will look at what you brought, ask what you want it to mean, and tell you honestly which direction fits, and what size makes sense for the number of garments you have.

T-Shirt Quilt vs. Memory Quilt: Frequently Asked Questions
A t-shirt quilt is a memory quilt made specifically from t-shirts and similar garments, event tees, sports jerseys, concert and school shirts, kept for the graphics and milestones printed on them. A memory quilt is the broader category: it is made from any clothing or fabric that carries meaning, including dress shirts, blouses, baby clothes, uniforms, and the garments of a loved one who has passed. Every t-shirt quilt is a memory quilt; not every memory quilt is a t-shirt quilt. Quilts by Big Wes makes both, handmade in Atlanta, GA.
Yes, and many are. Quilts by Big Wes regularly combines t-shirts with other meaningful garments in one quilt, for example a child's sports jerseys alongside a grandparent's shirt, or race tees mixed with a wedding fabric. The material decides the category, not a rule. Wesley helps you decide the mix at a free consultation before any cutting begins.
A memory quilt is usually the better fit when the goal is to honor a loved one who has passed, because it can be built from any of their clothing, not just t-shirts. Wesley handles memorial quilts with care and at the client's pace, and can also make memory bears or memory pillows from the same garments. If the person mostly wore event or team t-shirts, a t-shirt quilt is simply the t-shirt version of that same memorial keepsake.
Yes. Both are priced by finished size, not by type, starting at $275 for a Lap size. Final cost depends on size, number of garments, and design complexity rather than whether the source material is t-shirts or other clothing. Full pricing is at https://www.bigwes.com/pricing/.
For a graduate, a t-shirt quilt is the most common choice because it captures years of school, team, club, and event shirts in one keepsake they can take to college or a first apartment. If you also want to include non-shirt items, a baby blanket, a jersey, a favorite hoodie, it simply becomes a memory quilt that includes t-shirts. Quilts by Big Wes builds either from the garments you bring.
The garment count depends on finished size, not on whether it is a t-shirt quilt or a memory quilt. A Lap size uses about 9 to 12 garments and a Queen uses about 25 to 30. Bring everything you are considering to the consultation and Wesley will determine the best layout and size at Quilts by Big Wes in Atlanta, GA.
