Memory Bears Made from Clothing

People come to me with a bag of clothing and a lot of feeling they do not quite know what to do with. A parent's old work shirts. A grandmother's housecoat. A baby's first outfit that fit for about six weeks before it was outgrown. They are not ready to get rid of these things, but a drawer or a box in the closet does not feel like enough either. That is where a memory bear comes in.

A memory bear is a stuffed teddy bear handmade from garments that actually belonged to someone. Not fabric that looks like the clothing. The clothing itself. Cut, sewn, and stuffed into something you can hold onto, put on a shelf, or pass down to someone who never got to meet the person it came from. I make them here in Atlanta, and they start at $40 each.

What Kinds of Clothing Work for a Memory Bear?

The short answer is: most of it. If a garment was worn with meaning, there is a very good chance I can turn it into a bear. The fabric just needs to be sturdy enough to hold its shape once it is cut and sewn. Soft, woven materials work especially well for the exterior of the bear.

Here are some of the most common types of clothing I work with:

T-shirts and casual shirts. These are the most popular by far. A well-worn t-shirt carries something that a brand new piece of fabric never could.

Dress shirts and button-downs. A parent's everyday wardrobe, the shirts they wore to work for thirty years. Those translate beautifully into a bear with a lot of visual interest.

Hoodies and sweatshirts. The worn-in, soft pieces that meant comfort. They still do that job in bear form.

Baby and children's clothing. First outfits, tiny onesies, little-kid favorites that were grown out of too fast. A bear made from a baby's clothing is one of the most meaningful things I make.

Uniforms. Military, first responder, work uniforms, and sports uniforms. Clothing that represents service, sacrifice, or years of dedication.

Robes and loungewear. Housecoats and at-home clothing carry quiet everyday memories that are sometimes the most personal of all.

If you are not sure whether a specific item will work, reach out before your consultation and we will talk it through. Wear, fading, and minor staining are usually not a problem. That kind of history is part of what makes the bear meaningful.

How Much Clothing Do You Need?

Typically one to two garments is enough for a single bear, depending on how large the pieces are. A full dress shirt or a hoodie gives me plenty to work with. Smaller garments like baby onesies may need to be combined with one or two other pieces.

One of the questions I get most often is whether multiple bears can be made from the same collection of clothing. In many cases, yes. If there is enough fabric, or if you bring several garments, I can make bears for more than one person from the same set of clothes. This is a popular option for families who each want their own keepsake from a parent or grandparent's wardrobe. Bring what you have to the consultation and we will look at it together.

How the Memory Bear Process Works

I want you to feel good about every step of this before anything is cut. Here is how the process goes from start to finish.

Step one: we talk first. Schedule a free consultation and we will discuss the garment or garments, what this project means to you, and what you want the finished bear to look and feel like. Nothing is rushed here.

Step two: send the clothing. You can drop off garments in person by appointment at CreateATL, located at 900 Murphy Ave SW in Atlanta. If you are not local, you can ship them directly to me. I will provide instructions after your consultation. Nothing is cut without your approval.

Step three: I build your bear. Each bear is handmade from the garments you provided. I will keep you updated on progress and reach out if I have any questions before moving forward.

Step four: you receive your bear. Pick up in person or have it shipped anywhere in the United States with full insurance and tracking. Most orders are completed within two to three weeks. Rush options may be available, just ask.

Memory Bears and Memory Quilts Together

A lot of clients order a memory bear and a memory quilt from the same collection of clothing. It is a natural pairing. The quilt goes on the wall or the bed. The bear goes in someone's hands. Both made from the same garments. Both lasting in their own way.
