What Is Quilt Binding?

The Step That Finishes the Job

Binding is the fabric strip that wraps around the perimeter of a completed quilt, enclosing the raw edges of the top, batting, and backing. It is the final step before a quilt is truly done -- and it has a bigger impact on the finished look than most people expect.

Good binding lies flat, turns the corners cleanly, and holds up through years of washing and use. Poorly applied binding pulls, puckers, and comes loose at the corners. It is a skill that takes real practice to do consistently well.

I offer both machine and hand binding, and I can work with fabric you supply or source a coordinating fabric for you. Binding can be ordered as a standalone service or combined with longarm quilting in the same order.

Your Options

Machine Binding or Hand Binding

Both methods produce a beautiful, durable finish. The right choice depends on the project and the look you want.

Machine Binding

The binding strip is machine-stitched on both the front and back of the quilt, producing a strong, consistent edge with visible stitching on both sides. It is the faster option and holds up extremely well over time.

  • Faster turnaround time
  • Highly durable -- ideal for quilts that will be used daily
  • Visible machine stitching on the quilt back
  • Good choice for t-shirt quilts and everyday use quilts

Hand Binding

The binding strip is machine-stitched to the front, then hand-sewn to the back with a blind stitch. No visible machine stitching on the quilt back. The result is a softer, more traditional finish.

  • No visible machine stitching on the quilt back
  • Softer, more traditional edge with a handmade feel
  • Longer turnaround time than machine binding
  • Popular choice for memory quilts and display quilts

Talk Through Your Options

The Process

How Quilt Binding Works

A straightforward process from drop-off to finished quilt.

  1. We Talk First

Schedule a free consultation. We will confirm your quilt dimensions, discuss machine versus hand binding, and talk through fabric options. A firm quote is provided before anything moves forward.

  2. Send Your Quilt

Drop off your quilted quilt sandwich at CreateATL in Atlanta or ship it directly. The quilt top, batting, and backing need to be quilted together before binding can be applied.

  3. Binding Is Applied

I cut, press, and apply the binding by hand. Corners are mitered for a clean finish. I reach out with any questions before proceeding if anything needs clarification.

  4. Receive Your Finished Quilt

Pick up in person or have it shipped anywhere in the United States with full insurance and tracking.
