What Is a Memory Bear?

Something to Hold Onto When Words Are Not Enough

A memory bear is a stuffed teddy bear handmade from garments that carry real meaning -- a parent's favorite shirt, a grandparent's housecoat, a baby's first outfit, a uniform worn with pride. The bear itself becomes the keepsake, something you can hold and pass down.

Memory bears are one of the most personal projects I make. They are popular memorial gifts for families who have lost someone, but they are ordered for all kinds of reasons -- preserving a child's early clothing, honoring a milestone, or simply giving someone a tangible piece of a person they love.

Every bear starts with a conversation. We talk through which garment or garments to use, how you want the bear to look, and what this project means to you. Nothing is cut until we have talked it through.

What I Work With

If It Was Worn With Love, It Can Become a Bear

Most garments and woven fabrics can be incorporated. Here are some of the most common.

Dress Shirts & Button-Downs

A parent's everyday wardrobe -- the shirts that defined their style for years -- sewn into something you can hold.

Baby & Children's Clothing

First outfits, tiny onesies, and little-kid favorites that go by too fast -- preserved in a bear that grows up with your family.

Uniforms

Military, first responder, work, and sports uniforms representing service, sacrifice, and pride.

Hoodies & Sweatshirts

The worn-in, well-loved pieces that meant comfort and warmth -- still doing that job, just in a new form.

Robes & Loungewear

Housecoats, robes, and at-home clothing that carry quiet, everyday memories of someone who is no longer here.

Sports & School Apparel

Jerseys, team gear, and school shirts from seasons and years worth holding onto in more than just a photo.

The Process

How the Memory Bear Process Works

A thoughtful process from first conversation to finished bear. Nothing is rushed and nothing is cut without your approval.

  1. We Talk First

Schedule a free consultation. We'll discuss the garment or garments, what this project means, and what you want the finished bear to look and feel like.

  2. Send the Clothing

Drop off at CreateATL in Atlanta or ship directly. I handle all cutting with care. Nothing is altered without your approval first.

  3. I Build Your Bear

Each bear is handmade from the garments you provided. I will keep you updated on progress and reach out with any questions before proceeding.

  4. Receive Your Bear

Pick up in person or have it shipped anywhere in the United States with full insurance and tracking.

Often Ordered Together

Memory Bears and Memory Quilts

Many clients order a memory bear and a memory quilt from the same collection of clothing. It is a natural pairing -- the quilt goes on the wall or the bed, the bear goes in someone's hands. Both made from the same garments. Both lasting.
