I titled this quilt Summer Madness after the 1974 instrumental song by Kool & the Gang. I used some of my favorite fabrics to represent what I see as the colors of summer.
– tan and blue for the ocean and the beach
– pink and green Liberty Tawna flowers
– purple batik fabric for the summer sunsets
– light dark blue for the summer skies
– bright yellow for the midday sun
– vivid red for the mercury rising in the thermometer
According to the website Who Sampled, Kool & the Gang’s Summer Madness has been sampled in 244 songs. Listen to this track’s groove and vibe, and it’s easy to understand why.
To me, quilting is a lot like jazz. It is sometimes structured. Sometimes improvisational. It is always reflecting a mood or a thought. Like Ronald Bell’s mellotron, this quilt goes through a progression of sounds /colors that build on each other and crescendo to celebrate the season. I love this quilt because there is so much to love about Summertime:
Warmth and Sunshine: Summer is when the sun graces us with its radiant presence, bringing warmth and brightness to our days. It’s a season of outdoor adventures, basking in the sunlight and feeling the gentle caress of warm breezes on our skin.
Nature’s Abundance: Summer is a season of abundance in nature. Trees are lush with leaves, flowers bloom in vibrant colors, and fields burst with life. It’s a time to appreciate the beauty of nature and immerse ourselves in the great outdoors.
Freedom and Adventure: Summer represents a sense of freedom and adventure. With longer days and school breaks, it’s a time for families to travel, explore new places, and create lasting memories together.
Time for Relaxation: For many, summer is a season of relaxation and leisure. It’s a chance to slow down, take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and enjoy moments of tranquility.
Joyful Childhood Memories: For children, summer evokes carefree days filled with laughter and play. It’s a time of summer camps, picnics, ice cream treats, and endless games with friends, creating cherished memories that stay with them forever.
Refreshing Water Escapes: Summer offers the perfect opportunity to seek respite from the heat by diving into pools, lakes, or the ocean. The sound of splashing water and the feeling of refreshment brings a sense of rejuvenation and delight.
Seasonal Delights: Summer brings an array of seasonal delights, from juicy fruits like watermelon and strawberries to refreshing beverages like lemonade and iced tea. These culinary pleasures add to the joys of the season.
Opportunities for Growth: With more time for self-reflection and exploration, summer can be a time for personal growth and learning. Whether it’s through reading new books, pursuing hobbies, or attending workshops, summer offers a chance for self-discovery.
Nighttime Magic: Summer nights have a unique charm of their own. Fireflies light up the darkness, stars twinkle in the clear skies, and the air is filled with the sounds of crickets and frogs. It’s a time to stargaze and savor the enchantment of warm evenings.
Celebrations and Festivities: Many cultures have traditional celebrations and festivities during the summer months. These events unite communities, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural appreciation.
Appreciating Simple Pleasures: Summer encourages us to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. From watching a sunset to savoring a scoop of ice cream, it’s a reminder to find joy in the little things.
Summer’s fleeting nature reminds us to make the most of every moment. It’s a reminder to embrace the present, create meaningful experiences, and make the most of the season’s vibrant energy. Summer is a season of joy, exploration, and connection with nature. It’s a time to slow down, savor the warmth and beauty, and create lasting memories that will stay with us long after the season has passed.
