About Wesley

The Quilter Behind Quilts by Big Wes

I've been quilting professionally for over ten years, and I started Quilts by Big Wes with one straightforward goal: make quilts that people are genuinely proud to own. Not generic. Not rushed. Quilts built around the real stories and garments of the people who commission them.

I work out of CreateATL in Southwest Atlanta, a creative maker space that lets me run a fully equipped studio without the overhead of a standalone shop. Every quilt I make is sewn here, by hand, by me. There is no outsourcing, no factory production, and no shortcuts.

My specialty is custom t-shirt quilts and memory quilts -- the kinds of projects where the client brings me something irreplaceable and trusts me to make it into something lasting. I take that seriously. I've never had a client regret the finished quilt.

The Craft

Quilting as a Discipline

I approach quilting the way any serious maker approaches their craft: with intention, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in getting better. I study the history of the form -- particularly the traditions of African American quilting -- and I bring that perspective to everything I make.

I speak regularly at quilting guilds and academic programs -- including Howard University, Georgia Tech, and Lehman College -- on African American quilt traditions and the history of the Underground Railroad quilting canon. That background informs how I think about fabric, pattern, and purpose -- even in a custom t-shirt quilt.

When you hand me a box of your kid's game-worn jerseys or your mother's favorite blouses, I'm thinking about more than just layout. I'm thinking about what those things mean and what the quilt needs to feel like when it's done.
