Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc Quilt

Creating this AKA quilt was a special challenge (and treat) for me because I quilted the whole thing with intricate ivy leaves. Tshirt quilts also present the unique challenge of having to balance different-sized shirts into a grid. The owner of this quilt gave me some great insight into how she wanted her shirts arranged.

Founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., AKA has grown into a globally recognized and respected institution dedicated to uplifting women and making a positive impact on society.

AKA was established by a group of visionary women led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, who aimed to create a support network for African-American women pursuing higher education and professional careers. The sorority’s mission was to foster unity, academic excellence, and community service among its members, emphasizing the importance of education, leadership, and social responsibility.

Sisterhood is at the core of AKA’s identity. The sorority values inclusivity, friendship, and the cultivation of strong bonds among its members. Through mentorship, collaboration, and shared experiences, AKA creates a lifelong network of support that extends far beyond the college years.

AKA’s values are encapsulated in its “Twenty Pearls,” which are the twenty founding members of the sorority. These pearls represent key principles such as sisterhood, scholarship, service, leadership, and character. AKA encourages its members to embody these values in their personal and professional lives.

Education has been a cornerstone of AKA since its inception. The sorority provides scholarships, grants, and educational programs to support the academic endeavors of its members and the broader community. AKA’s commitment to education has positively impacted countless individuals by empowering them to pursue their educational aspirations.

Service is also a fundamental aspect of AKA’s identity. Through its diverse array of community service initiatives, AKA makes a meaningful difference in the lives of people around the world. The sorority focuses on issues such as health, education, social justice, and economic empowerment. AKA’s impact is felt through initiatives like mentoring programs, health awareness campaigns, and community development projects.

With over 300,000 members and chapters in multiple countries, AKA’s influence extends across continents. The sorority’s commitment to service, sisterhood, and uplifting communities has led to partnerships with numerous organizations and institutions, amplifying its impact on a global scale.
