You're looking at a life fully lived. Every single shirt in that collection represented a finish line crossed, a hill climbed, a mile logged in the rain or the heat or both. My job was to make sure the quilt honored every one of them. This is one of those projects that reminded me exactly why I do this work. ## Thirty Shirts, One Story She had been collecting race and ride shirts for years, cycling events, charity rides, road races. Each shirt was a marker of something she'd accomplished, a wearable record of her athletic life. By the time she brought them to my studio at CreateATL here in Atlanta, she had 30 shirts and was ready to stop keeping them in a drawer. She knew she wanted a quilt. What she didn't know yet was just how personal we were going to make it. When we sat down to talk through the design, it was clear right away that a standard grid layout wasn't going to be enough. This collection had a personality, bold colors, event logos, years of memories, and the quilt needed to reflect that. We talked about layout, about how to arrange the shirts so the quilt told a story visually. And then she mentioned how much cycling meant to her, and that's when the idea for the custom bicycle stitch came up. ## A Custom Bicycle Stitch, Built Just for Her I love a design challenge, and this one was genuinely fun to work through. We created a custom bicycle stitch worked right into the quilt itself, a detail that tied the whole piece together and made it unmistakably, specifically hers. She'll tell you herself: she couldn't visualize how I was going to pull it off. She had seen plenty of t-shirt quilts before, but a custom stitched design integrated into the quilt? She wasn't sure what to expect. When she saw the finished piece, she was blown away. That reaction, that moment when someone sees their memories transformed into something beautiful, never gets old for me. It's the whole reason I do this. ## Why Race and Ride Shirts Make Exceptional Quilts If you've been running or cycling for any amount of time, you know how fast the shirts accumulate. Race shirts are some of my favorite materials to work with, and here's why they translate so well into quilts: **They're already meaningful.** Every shirt has a date, a location, an event name. The story is literally printed on the fabric. You're not just sewing shirts together, you're assembling a timeline of someone's athletic life. **The variety of designs makes for a visually dynamic quilt.** No two race shirts look the same, which means no two quilts like this look the same either. Bold graphics, different color palettes, varying fonts, it all comes together in a way that's genuinely eye-catching. **Performance fabric holds up well.** When handled correctly by an experienced quilter, the moisture-wicking and technical fabrics used in athletic shirts are durable and quilt beautifully. **They become an heirloom.** A box of shirts stuffed in a closet has a shelf life. A quilt made from those same shirts is something you display, something you wrap up in, something you eventually pass down. Thirty shirts might sound like a lot to work with, and it is a substantial collection, but it's also the perfect size for a full, generous quilt that makes a real visual statement. ## The Details Are What Make It Yours At Quilts by Big Wes, I don't do cookie-cutter. Every project I take on starts with a conversation, because the best quilts come from understanding who the person is and what their collection means to them. Sometimes that means a thoughtful layout that arranges shirts chronologically. Sometimes it means a custom design element, like a bicycle stitch, that reflects exactly who you are. This client came in with a box of shirts she didn't know what to do with.
