Client Stories # She Wore Those AKA Shirts for 40 Years. We Turned Them Into a Quilt. Twenty shirts, forty years of membership, and a Mother's Day deadline. That combination puts a certain kind of weight in your hands, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is the kind of project I love most. Not just because the colors are gorgeous, though pink and green never disappoints, but because the story behind the shirts is so rich. Forty years of chapter meetings, probate shows, conventions, community service events, and friendships that run deep. Every shirt in that bag represented something she had lived through as an AKA woman. ## What Was in the Bag Twenty shirts came in, ranging from what looked like the mid-1980s all the way up to recent years. Some were crisp and bright. Others had that soft, worn-in feel that only comes from being washed and loved a hundred times. A few had event dates printed on the back. One had her chapter letters in big block print across the front. I always sort shirts by era and condition before I start cutting. With a collection this wide, you want to think carefully about placement so the quilt reads as one cohesive piece rather than a random stack of fabric. Older shirts went toward the center. Newer ones worked outward. That gave the finished quilt a quiet sense of history moving forward, even if most people looking at it would not be able to articulate why it felt that way. ## The Design Decision That Made It The family did not give me a specific design brief beyond wanting it to feel like an AKA quilt. That is exactly the kind of creative latitude I appreciate. I decided to lean fully into the sorority colors and let the design speak for itself. I used pink sashing between every block. Sashing is the narrow strip of fabric that frames each shirt panel and gives the eye a place to rest between images. Pink was the obvious choice here, and it brought warmth and cohesion to what could have otherwise felt like a busy patchwork of graphics and text. For the outer border I went with green, the other half of that iconic AKA palette. A wide green border grounds the whole quilt and gives it a finished, intentional look. When you step back and take in the full piece, the pink and green frame tells you immediately what organization this woman belongs to and how proud she is of it. The binding ties it all together. I matched the binding to the border so the edge of the quilt carries that same green all the way around. He had never commissioned a quilt before and was not sure how twenty old shirts were going to turn into something beautiful. When I unfolded it in front of him, he was shocked. That is the word he used, shocked, in the best possible way. That reaction means everything to me. I have been doing this work long enough to know that clients often come in a little uncertain. They have a bag of shirts they cannot bring themselves to throw away, but they cannot quite picture what the finished quilt will look like either. The reveal is where all of that uncertainty turns into something else entirely. I hope she loved it on Mother's Day just as much as he did standing there in my studio.
